Lunar Moon [月]
“A celebration of life and new beginnings under the lunar moon.’’
The lunar moon in Chinese culture is associated with peace, prosperity, and family reunion.
This collection aims to explore the concept of the lunar moon, drawing lines between the many faces of the moon to the emotions and traditions of the Chinese.
Conceptual Research
3D Craters
With the idea of creating something unique and a realistic visual of the physical aspect of my concept, I played around with 3D modelling paste to create a surface texture similar to the craters and holes on the moon
Weaving
The weaving of every ribbon represents every connection made among friends & family in relation to what the moon symbolises in Chinese culture, reunion.
Yarn Moons
With the idea of making a softer version of the moon craters, I used rolls of yarns and corded them in a circular motion on fabric to create a packed patch of yarn. the motion of cording the yarn in a circular directions naturally causes the fabric to cave in a create depth like an actual crater.
Stacking
Stacking is ideal for designs that want to show a lot of movement between the garment & wearer. I used semi-circle cut-outs to imitate full moons & half moon phases. the movement of the stacks creates an elegant flowiness I want to capture in my collection.
Cording Clouds
In ancient & traditional ink paintings, clouds are simply painted as curvy lines to show the wispiness of them. Clouds are often captured with the moon and are an undeniable partner of the moon in the night sky.
